YEAR 3000
SOUTH ASIAN FUTURISMS
-
Within the global South Asian community lies an expansive archive
of cultures, spiritualities, philosophies, and ancient knowledge.
Some of it is preserved through language, ritual, and resistance.
Some of it lives in our stories, our myths, our art.
But much of it has been buried, suppressed by colonisation,
lost in the name of “progress.”
And look where that’s brought us.
A world on fire, systems collapsing, futures fraying at the edges
not just for us, but for everyone.
Future generations risk inheriting a world with far less
than what we were given.
Our ancient wisdom, philosophies and practices might be
exactly what we need now
not just to survive, but to restore balance.
But wait, it’s not enough to try to solve the problems of today
Because remember when the Industrial Revolution came about in the 18th century, what seemed to be innovative at the time was short-sighted, and we’re still living with the consequences.
So how do we truly think ahead, when solving today’s problems?
How can we think outside of Western colonial attitudes and systems?
Place yourself in the year 3000. And begin to speculate:
What might human relationship to nature and other living beings look like?
How could human interaction with technology and materials evolve?
What systems of class and caste might fall away or be reimagined?
How might humans relate to each other, to love, to labour, to care?
What role can your practice as a South Asian artist or designer play in shaping these futures?
This is an invitation for you to tap into your ancestral wisdom - which you may carry consciously or even subconsciously - and speculate from it. Dream forward from what your ancestors held sacred. Because even when we don’t fully understand them, they shape how we move through the world.
Speculate not on the future, but on futures — plural, infinite, layered.
Draw from ancestral knowledge or personal memory, from grief or joy, from imagined utopias or grounded alternatives.
Selected works will be part of a VR exhibition, allowing audiences to leap into the year 3000 and experience your ideas in immersive ways.
